Chugiak resident and former Waterloo, resident, Bree Malinda Ericson Hays, 36, passed away after a 17 year battle with breast cancer; starting when she was 19 years old; at her home in Chugiak, Alaska on June 2, 2013.

The service for Bree was held at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Eagle River on Friday, June 7, 2013, at 3 p.m. with Father Tom, Father Anthony and Father Augustine as the officiants. Following cremation Bree was laid to rest at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery Anchorage, Alaska.

Bree was born in Waterloo, Iowa on Aug. 7, 1976. Daughter of Reed and Laurene Lanigan Ericson. She married Zac Hays on Sept. 2, 2000, in Anchorage, Alaska. She received her BSN in nursing at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. She lived in Anchorage from 1992-2005 where she worked as a school nurse at Ursa Minor Elementary School JBER Military Base and from 2005-2011 she lived in Petersburg, Alaska, where she worked as an administrator at Mountain View Manor and as nursing administrator at Petersburg Medical Center. Bree loved spending time with her family, Zac and her boys Angus and Lachlan, and enjoyed reading, gardening and photography. Bree continued her quest to obtain her MSN throughout the last 2 years of her illness refusing to let cancer defeat her desire to live a normal life and accomplish her goals.

Her family wrote, “Bree has always defied the odds and overcome the many obstacles in her life with a grace that is and will always be admired. Her beautiful presence will always be felt through her two children that she and Zac fought so hard to have and to raise. Her family is the one accomplishment in her life that Bree was most proud of. She will be remembered for her courage in the most difficult times and her grace in overcoming all obstacles as a mother, wife, daughter and sister or friend who influenced and touched many in her life.”

Survivors include her sons, Angus Michael Hays, 8 years old, and Lachlan Henry Hays, 2 years old; husband Zachary Hays (Zac); parents Reed and Laurene Ericson; sister Shauna (Sarper) Ericson-Kadioglu; uncles Tom (Kami) Lanigan, Lanny (Peggy) Lanigan and John Tovar; aunt Barb Lehman, aunt Priscilla Lanigan, God Mother/aunt Linda (Walt) Silva, aunt Dianne Maldonado; uncles and aunts Max and Barb Ericson and Janet and Mark Dunkelberger; brothers-in-law Steve (Diana) Hays, and Adam (Kim) Hays; sister-in-law Therese (Wes) Hartlieb; mother and father-in-law Pam and Dave Brennen; father and mother-in-law Rob and Ann Hays. Bree is survived by many cousins and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Clarence and Mary Lanigan, Edge and Helen Ericson; Great-grandparents Silas and B. Malinda Ericson, uncle Jim Lanigan; cousin Tyler Pearce; and grandparents-in-law Marie and Henry Kirchner.
