EVANSDALE - Tragedy struck twice Monday morning in the same family and in houses side-by-side on the same street.

Five hours after Walter Nagel, 59, of 830 2nd Ave., was killed in a car accident, his father-in-law, Roy Bloxham, 75, of 842, 2nd Ave., died at 11:05 a.m. at Schoitz Memorial Hospital of complications resulting from a bleeding ulcer.

Funeral services for both are pending at the Evansdale Funeral Home.

A two-car crash at 6:10 a.m. Monday at the Gilbertville Rd. and Highway 20 intersection resulted in the death of Mr. Nagel, the Black Hawk County Sheriff's office said.

According to the investigating officer, Nagel was driving a pickup and pulled onto the highway into the path of a loaded van driven by Jeffrey Clowser, 22 of 1225 Hartman Ave., who was en route to Cedar Rapids.

The collision threw Nagel from the pickup and Clowser was pinned in his vehicle but was freed with the use of pry bars. Clowser suffered sprains to both wrists and a shattered right knee cap.

Nagel was reported dead on arrival at Schoitz Memorial Hospital with his chest crushed and arm and head injuries. Clowser also was admitted to Schoitz Hospital and reported in good condition.
