WATERLOO - Oliver Boomgarden, 78, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at ManorCare Health Services of lung cancer.

He was born June 22, 1929, in Aplington, son of Menno and Stenja Mehmen Boomgarden. He married Lorene Ann Miller on Jan. 3, 1955, in Minnesota. She died July 14, 1997.

Mr. Boomgarden graduated from Nashua High School in 1948 and was a member of the U.S. Army Co. B, 321st Sig. Bn. from 1951 to 1953. He was employed at Oliver Tractor Co. in Charles City; worked at Rath Meat Packing Plant, then was a machinist for 25 years at Viking Pump Co., retiring in 1991. During this time he also worked at Wilbert Vault Co. and was employed part time with Catholic Cemeteries of Waterloo.

Survivors include a son, Dana (Barb) of Anoka, Minn.; a daughter, Dawn (Scott) Weber of Bethel, Minn.; two stepsons, Ronald (Becky) Hicok of Springville, Ill., and Donald (Nancy) Hicok of Norco, Calif.; two stepgrandchildren, Tami (Dan) Oliphant and Shane Hicok; four stepgreat-grandchildren, Russell Dean, Katlyn and Abby Oliphant and Taylor Hicok; and two sisters, Irene Davids of Kanawaha and Amanda Plotner of Sonora, Calif.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Jake and Claus "Bud"; and a sister, Anna Bean.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on Ridgeway, and for an hour before services Monday at the church. Full military rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.
