DIED: April 5, 2008, Cedar Falls, Iowa

Harriet Kin Han Ma, 84, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Allen Memorial Hospital, in Waterloo.

Harriet was born July, 7, 1923, in Guangzhou, China, the daughter of James San Fong and Lee Mo Tak. She was educated in China at Zhong Shan University receiving an advanced degree in education administration with a music minor. She worked as a school principal at Guangdong Elementary School and taught music there as well.

She was united in marriage to Fred Yiew Min Ma in Guangzhou, on October 10, 1947. He died July 23, 1996. The couple immigrated to the United States after the 1949 Communist takeover of China. Harriet had been an adjunct professor of Chinese language at the University of Northern Iowa for 13 years and had also been employed by Woolverton Printing in Cedar Falls.

Surviving Harriet are three daughters, Vivien M. (Roderick W.) Anderson of Powder Springs, Georgia, Laurinda M. (James G.) Romportl of Hopkins, Minnesota, and Symone K Ma of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren; one brother, Kin Chuen of China; two sisters, Kin Sheung of San Francisco, and Kin Nor also of China. Preceding Harriet in death were her daughter, Sylbie Blau; and two brothers and two sisters.

Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church with burial of cremains at a later date in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call at the Richardson Funeral Home on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The family will be present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday for one hour prior to service time.

Memorials may be directed to The University of Northern Iowa School of Music or the church.
