LA PORTE CITY - Willis Meyer, 96, of La Porte City, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born Dec. 2, 1909, in Martell, Neb., son of John and Amanda Meyer. He married Helen R. Martin on Dec. 18, 1937, in Lincoln, Neb.

Mr. Meyer was a farmer in both Nebraska and Iowa for 45 years, retiring in 1965. He then worked for La Porte City schools as a custodian until 1977 and also was employed with Spence Fertilizer.

Survivors include his wife; five sons: Leon of Fort Ogden, Fla., Elmer (Marilyn) of Dysart, James (Dianne) of La Porte City, Gary (Jeanne) Spettel of Rochester, Minn., and Bill Spettel of Waterloo; two daughters, Sharron Breitzman of Gladstone, Mich., and Sherri (Steve) Klein of La Porte City; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, John of Minnesota Lake, Minn., and Orville of Utah; and six sisters, Irene Hummann of Santa Maria, Calif., Lucille Bennett of Orcutt, Calif., Lorraine Wilbur of Lincoln, Neb., Margurite Vorbriol of Monteclair, Calif., Doris Henninger of Weatherford, Texas, and June Elliot of Camden, Ark.

Preceded in death by a brother, Woodrow; and three sisters, Glenola Ober, May Ruwe and Francis Thober.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with burial in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. Public visitation 4 to 8 p.m. today at Huisman Funeral Home, La Porte City, and for an hour before services Monday at the church.
