Nee Mahala Hilborn

Obituary: "The Waterloo Evening Courier": Saturday, December 24, 1910, Page 10

SUDDEN DEATH OCCURED [sic] TODAY

MRS. MAHALA BUTTERFIELD EXPIRED THIS MORNING

Early Resident of the County, Came Here in 1863.

Death came suddenly to Mrs. Mahala Butterfield this morning at the home of her son, J. F. Butterfield, in Orange township, for she was apparently in her usual health when her son spoke to her at 6 o’clock this morning but was dead when he returned to the house an hour later, after attending to the early morning work.

Five years ago Mrs. Butterfield suffered a broken hip so that she had been obliged to get about on crutches ever since. However, she was as well as ever yesterday, so that the death seemed very unexpected to the relatives and friends.

Mrs. Butterfield, whose maiden name was Mahala HILBORN, was born in Fayette county, Pa., April 2, 1831, and would have been eighty years of age had she lived until next April. When a young girl she moved with her parents to Greene [sic] county, Wis., where she was married March 6, 1849, to Elijah S. Butterfield. They came to Black Hawk county in 1863, so were old residents of the county. For many years they lived in Waterloo and she continued to make her home here, even after the death of her husband in 1883, until a year ago, when she went to make her home with her son at whose house death occurred.

Eleven children were born to them, of whom four have passed away. Those surviving are Mrs. Jane Rector, Emporia, Kan.; Mrs. D. M. Miller, Waterloo; Miss Marie Butterfield, Waterloo; J. F. Butterfield, Orange township; A. F., Corwith; W. O., Waterloo, and George E., Swea City. Four sisters and one brother also survive, these being Mrs. John Sine, Mrs. M. Rose, Mrs. Llewelyn Probert and Mrs. Clara Pickens, Waterloo, and Jacob Hillborn, Northwood.

The funeral arrangements have not been completed but the services will be held from the home probably Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Frank Cole will conduct the services and burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
