Mary J. Lichty, 82, of Waterloo, died Thursday, November 22, 2007, at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center after an extended illness.

She was born August 25, 1925 in Waterloo, daughter of E.A. and Mary Margaret Seery McDermott. She married John S. Lichty February 5, 1948 in Waterloo. He died June 11, 2007.

She was a graduate of East High School. She was a navy wave during WWII. Mary was owner/operator of Smile Awhile Antiques for many years in Waterloo. She was a member of Waterloo City Council and a mayoral candidate.

Survivors include four sons: Bob (Carolyn) of Menomonie, WI; Don (Mary Jo) of Cary, NC; Jim (Anni) of Parnell, and Dan (Kristy) of Evansdale; five daughters: Katy (Bob) Van Erem, Margaret (John) McCoy, and Brigid (Tim) Knipp, all of Waterloo Patty (Gene) Reuter of Cedar Rapids, and Teresa Kaye of Traer; 27 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; a sister Patty Jackson of Bradenton, FL and a special niece JoDel (Darold) Bush of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by two grandsons, Timmy Knipp and John Kaye III and a son-in-law John Kaye II; a sister Evelyn Mealhow; three brothers: Fabian, Joseph, and Donald McDermott; and a special niece Sally Rutter.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with military rites conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Public visitation will be from 4:00 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, at Hagarty Waychoff Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 4:00 p.m. Rosary and a 7:00 p.m. Vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials to Cedar Valley Hospice or Columbus High School. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center and to Cedar Valley Hospice.
