Rev. Msgr. Edward C. Petty, 60, pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Gilbertville and St. Joseph Parish in Raymond died Tuesday Oct. 16, 2007, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday Oct. 22 at 10:30 AM at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with Archbishop Jerome Hanus OSB presiding. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery Dyersville. There will be a visitation on Saturday October 20 from 5:30 PM to 8 PM with a rosary at 7:30 at Immaculate Conception Church in Gilbertville. There will be a visitation on Sunday October 21 from 3 PM to 8 PM with a rosary at 7 PM at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville. There will also be a public viewing two hours before services on Monday October 22.

Msgr. Petty was born Oct. 8, 1947 to Edward and Lillian (Bosley) Petty in Des Moines.

Surviving is a brother William of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque taught at Wahlert High School in Dubuque 1969-73 and completed his theological studies at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 19, 1977, by His Eminence Sergio Cardinal Pignedoli at the North American College Chapel in Rome. He served as assistant papal master of ceremonies for the Vatican 1975-77. He was associate pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Gilbertville while serving on the faculty of Don Bosco High School 1977-79. He completed advanced studies at the National Catholic School of Social Services Catholic University Washington D.C. 1979-81 and earned a masters degree in social work. He served as associate/acting director of Dubuque Archdiocesan Catholic Charities 1981-82 and director of Catholic Charities 1982-87. He was pastor of St. Donatus Parish in St. Donatus 1985-87 and Immaculate Conception Parish in Charles City and St. Mary Parish in Roseville 1987-92. He served as pastor of St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville 1992-2004 and St. Paul Parish in Worthington 2002-2004. He was executive coordinator of the Beckman School System Dyersville 1994-2004. He had been pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Gilbertville and St. Joseph Parish in Raymond and spiritual director of Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville since 2004. He was named a prelate of honor (monsignor) on April 26, 2003.

Memorials may be sent to Beckman High School or Hospice of Dubuque.
