Waterloo - George Tyler Hubbard, 78, of 516 West First St., died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at his home.

George was born in Minot, N.D., on Sept. 2, 1926, son of Ralph and Leora (Lowe) Hubbard. His family moved to Minneapolis where he graduated from Minneapolis West High School in 1944.

After high school, George joined the U.S. Navy, attended boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Station, electrician school at Purdue University, and served aboard the USS Biloxi during World War II. He was discharged in 1946 and recalled to active duty in 1950 during the Korean War serving on the USS Chickaskia. After Korea, discharged in 1954, he served in the Naval Reserve, retiring in 1985 with 41 years of service.

George married LaDonna Gulsvig March 10, 1948, at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Edina, Minn. He worked 33 years for Sears and retired in 1986.

George was active at Trinity Episcopal Parish, served on the Vestry, was senior warden, and Sunday School superintendent. He was a member of Civitan Club, Cedar Valley Historical Society, Military Officers Association of America and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. George earned Boy Scouts Eagle Scout Award as a boy, was Scoutmaster of Troop 118 in Denver, Iowa, and Scout committee man for his grandsons Troop 96 in Urbandale. He was always eager to give a helping hand.

He is survived by his wife, LaDonna; son, Rick of Urbandale; daughter, Linda of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Sarah, Chris, and Emily; and two sisters, Rita Schugk of Salt Lake City and Sue (Wayne) Anderson of St. Louis Park, Minn.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Parish, followed by inurnment in Orange Township Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post No. 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post No. 31. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Parish or Cedar Valley Hospice.
