Gun mishap proves fatal
to rural Cedar Falls man

A rural Cedar Falls man was killed Thursday when his gun accidentally discharged. Wilfred Pearl Burkhardt, 59, of 9008 Mark Road, was found dead with a chest wound on Ford Road near County Road C-57 about 10:45 a.m. Thursday.

Burkhardt had stopped his pickup in the road apparently after spotting some stray dogs that could molest livestock, Black Hawk County sheriff's deputies said.

He got out, and while he was reaching into the back seat for his 16-gauge shotgun, it went off. The blast hit him in the chest.

Family friends told deputies that farmers in the area had been having trouble with the stray dogs chasing cattle. They said Burkhardt told them he was going to shoot stray dogs that could be involved, deputies reported.
