WATERLOO — Steven R. Kies, 61, of Waterloo, died Monday, April 8, 2013, of a heart attack in Spread Eagle, Wis.

He was born Dec. 15, 1951, in Waterloo, son of Melvin and Donna Willer Kies. He married Sharon Baskerville in 1994 in Richmond, Va. She died in 2004.

He graduated from West High School in 1970 and then attended Oklahoma State University. Mr. Kies served in the U.S. Navy from 1970 until 1976 as aviation electronic technician aboard the USS Hancock and USS Ranger. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Richmond, retiring in 2009.

Survived by his father of Waterloo; four sisters: Katie (Bruce) Wickham, Susan Kies and Jean Marie Southworth, all of Waterloo, and Leslie Kies of Phoenix; a stepson, Wes (Cameron) Baskerville of Richmond; a stepdaughter, Ashleigh (Chad) Cooke of Richmond; two grandchildren, Haley and Brayden; a sister-in-law, Diane Hurst of Richmond; two nephews, Nick Nenow of Waterloo and Elliott Pratt of Phoenix; three nieces, Erica (Julio Juarez) Pratt and Ashley Pratt, both of Phoenix, and Katie Lynn Southworth of Waterloo; and a great-nephew, Maximo Juarez.

Preceded by his mother.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Locke Funeral Home with flag presentation by American Legion Post No. 138 and VFW Post No. 1623. Burial, following cremation, will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
