Ann (Scroggy) Carpenter (July 6, 1815 - March 18, 1907)

[Waterloo Semi Weekly Courier, Friday, March 22, 1907, Waterloo, Iowa]

DIED AT AGE OF NINETY-ONE YEARS

After fifty-three years residence in Black Hawk County, Mrs. J. H. Carpenter passed away at her home in Orange Township yesterday afternoon, dying at the age of ninety-one years and nine months. Death came after only a brief illness and was due largely to the weakness incident to old age.

Deceased was born in New Jersey in July 1816. When thirteen years of age, she moved with her parents to Ohio and later to Pennsylvania where they lived for ten years in Pittsburgh. In 1854, the family came to Iowa, settling in Black Hawk County, where they have lived ever since. At an early age, deceased was married to J. H. Carpenter, who preceded her to the grave several years ago.

Eight children were born to them, five sons and three daughters of whom four survive. Wm. L. Carpenter, Des Moines, I. S. Carpenter, Waterloo; D. H. Carpenter, Alta; Mrs. A. Allen, Cedar Falls. The son who resides at Des Moines was at one time mayor of the capital city and all are well known citizens in the sections where they reside. Mrs. Allen's husband was a brother of H. B. Allen, for many years a leading banker of Waterloo.

The relatives from out of town arrived today and the funeral services will be held tomorrow from the First Methodist church of which deceased had been a life long member. Rev. Frank Cole, pastor of the church, will conduct the services which will be held at 1:30.

A long life well lived is its own best sermon. Through the long span of years which it was allotted her to live, Mrs. Carpenter unconsciously inspired high ideals and noble actions in all who came in contact with her. A loving wife, mother and friend, patient in her endurance of sorrow, she was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need and lived for nearly ninety-two years, the ideal life of service and love.
