CEDAR FALLS — Eugene “Gene” Shields, 82, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, April 8, 2013, at Sartori Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 24, 1931, in Cedar Falls, son of Lyle and Elsie Marie Grapp Shields. He married Mary Dorothy Heinen on June 13, 1959, in Preston, Minn.

Mr. Shields served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and worked at Clay Equipment Co. for 47 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 and First Christian Church, Cedar Falls.

Survived by his wife; a son, Mark of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren: Sharon Randall, Elizabeth (Jacob) Randall, Amber (Levi) Loy and Zachary Shields; two great-grandchildren, Amara and Braxton Randall; three sisters: Lorraine Evelyn England of Tama, Betty Virginia Brown of Waterloo and Gertrude Arlene Sullivan of Sulvisca, Ariz.; and a son-in-law, Gary Randall of Rogers, Ark.

Preceded in death by two sons, Gene and Timothy; a daughter, Theresa Randall; two brothers, Edward and Edgar; and a sister, Lula Erwin.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Cedar Falls, with inurnment in Washington Chapel Cemetery, rural Cedar Falls, at a later date. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
