HUDSON — Byron L. Kern, 79, of Hudson, died Sunday, April 7, 2913, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo.
He was born April 21, 1933, in Shelby, son of Lowell and Alice Porter Kern. On July 27, 1964, he married Shirley Antle in Preston, Minn.
Mr. Kern graduated from Dinsdale High School, served in the U.S. Navy for five years and served in the reserves for many years. He worked for Wilbert Meinhart Farms for 30 years, retiring in 1996. After moving to Hudson he managed the Country Plaza Apartments.
Survived by his wife; three sons: Jeffrey (Megan) and William Byron (Raetta) Kern, both of Des Moines, and Mike (Michelle) Weidner of Waterloo; a daughter, Denise (William) Clapp of Waterloo; nine grandchildren: Kahla, Jessica, Andy, Lucas, Stephanie, Tori, Jessyca, Aaron and Bob; seven great-grandchildren, Maddox, Kensington, Jacob, Andrew, Autumn, Emma and Leland; a brother, Roy (Ellen) of Traer; and a sister, Marjorie (Emil) Cufr of Traer.
Preceded in death by a son, Johnathan; two brothers, Wentzel and Marvin; and a sister, Ruth Wood.
Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, preceded by an hour of visitation.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Byron was a very hard worker and took pride in everything he did. His greatest joys were his kids and grandkids.
