WATERLOO - Richard G. Zellhoefer, 89, of 221 Columbia Circle, died Friday, August 10, 2007, at home of a heart attack.

He was born January 15, 1918, in Waterloo, son of Victor A. and Hazel (Smith) Zellhoefer. He married Helen P. Hospers on December 21, 1948, at First Congregational Church in Waterloo.

Mr. Zellhoefer graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1935. He was a member of the East High School Hall of Fame. He attended Iowa State Teachers College for two years before transferring to the University of Iowa. In 1939 he was awarded a bachelor of science degree from the University of Iowa, and then entered the College of Law where he was graduated in 1942.

Following law school, Dick was inducted into the U.S. Army as a private, where he took basic and advanced training as a rifleman and machine gunner at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He was eventually admitted to the Infantry Officers Candidate School. He was then sent to Europe and Japan with the 97th Infantry.

After the war, Dick entered the law practice in Waterloo with Ralph Travis and James Graham. He was a member of the Waterloo Recreation Commission and served as an assistant city attorney for the city of Waterloo. He was a member of the Iowa State Bar Association Inheritance Tax Committee and Board of Governors. He was appointed to and served a six-year term on the Iowa Supreme Court Nominating Commission. In 1972, he served as president of the Iowa State Bar Association, and later served several years on the board of directors of the Iowa State Bar Foundation. He was awarded the State Bar Award of Merit in 1993 for service to the legal profession and to the public.

Dick became a member of many legal and civic organizations during his career, including Community Foundation of Waterloo, Black Hawk County Red Cross Board, First Congregational Church, Waterloo Kiwanis Club, American Legion, Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, Spokeman Club, No Name Club of Waterloo, Black Hawk County Title Club, Black Hawk County Estate Planning Council, American College of Trust and Estate Council, University of Iowa President's Club, University of Iowa Alumni Association and University of Iowa Law School Foundation.

Dick retired from the practice of law in 2003 as a partner of Zellhoefer Law Offices where he practiced law with his son, David.

Survivors include daughter Susan H. Zellhoefer of Farmington, New Mexico, daughter Anne P. Zellhoefer of Madison, Wisconsin, and son David R. Zellhoefer of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Martin of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Daniel of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Lynne of Waterloo and Jayden of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Virginia Anderson, and his wife, Helen.

There will be no services; Dick donated his body to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Locke Funeral Home, 233-6138, is assisting the family. Memorials may be directed to The Community Foundation of Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Northeast Iowa for the benefit of the Waterloo Center for the Arts.
