Oscar Suhr Death Ruled A Suicide

The death of a 61 year old Waterloo man Tuesday morning was ruled a suicide after he was discovered by a passerby in his car with a pipe leading from the muffler into the car, according to County Medical Examiner Dr. Paul O'Keefe.

Found dead in his car parked in a field driveway on Skyvue Road was Oscar Cal Suhr, 61, who apparently died of carbon monoxide poisoning about 6 a.m. Dr. O'Keefe said.

The passerby discovered the car about 6:30 a.m. and notified the fire department emergency squad, but efforts to revive Suhr failed. Dr. O'Keefe said he apparently had been despondent over family problems.

Mr. Suhr, of 214 Ogden Ave., was born Jan. 3, 1906, in Bremer County to William and Anna Stalk Suhr. He was a maintenance man for the Rath Packing Co. for 29 years before retiring in 1966.

He married Mary Achilles on Nov. 15, 1952, in Clarksville. They spent their married life in Waterloo.

Surviving are his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Vicki Joann Reed of Ottumwa; four sisters: Mrs. Caroline Derks and Mrs. Anna Shafter of Oelwein, Mrs. Tilly Malious of Independence, and Mrs. Margaret Fetcator of Maynard; four brothers" Louis, of Oran, Otto of Fairbank, Paul of Oelwein, and Willie of Hawkeye.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, two wives and one brother.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Parrott & Wood chapel, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Wednesday.
