[Iowa State Reporter, Thursday, November 7, 1889, Waterloo, Iowa]

The news of the death of Robert B. Manson, which occurred on Friday night last, caused a deep feeling of sadness throughout the city. Although it was generally known that he had been suffering from diabetics for several years past, no one anticipated serious consequences and very few even knew of his illness, as he had been on the streets only a few days before his death. A severe cold complicated the old trouble, and on Friday it became apparent that he could not survive.

Robert Bruce Manson was the only son of the late Robert and Mrs. A. Manson. He was born in Hinsdale, Cattaraugus County, N. Y., Oct. 29, 1853.

His family moved to Waterloo a few years later, and his life here is familiar to all. He attended the public schools and afterwards the state university. His first business enterprise was the organization of the firm of Manson, Tufts & Wichman, for the manufacture of crackers, etc. He engaged actively in the business, and the firm built up a large trade in the territory north and west of this city. The business was afterwards removed to Sioux City, and Mr. Manson retained his connection with the firm, but did not give the same personal attention to details, because of his condition of health. In all matters Mr. Manson was active and public spirited.

Deceased leaves a wife; two daughters, mother and two sisters. His father died last spring and the family bereavements have been frequent and especially sad for several years. The sympathy of all classes is with them in their sorrow.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the family residence, Rev. E. M. Barrett, of Iowa City, a former pastor of the Presbyterian Church, conducted the services assisted by Rev. C. H. Purmort, of this city. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, and the singing was by a male quartette, Messrs. Bentley, Phillips, Platt and Cole.
