WATERLOO — Paul R. “Charlie” Schaefer, 74, died Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Friendship Village.

He was born Nov. 11, 1938, in Waterloo, son of Peter P. and Rosetta M. McGarvey Schaefer.

His was the last class to graduate from St. Mary of Mount Carmel High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Schaefer worked as a plumber for Garvey Plumbing, Buckingham, for nine years and for Young Plumbing & Heating Co., Waterloo, for 48 years. He was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Survived by four brothers: Patrick J. (Suzzanne), David J. (Teresa), Bruce W. (Danette) and Loras J. (Marlene), all of Waterloo; four sisters: Doris M. Schaefer of Waterloo, Rosemary Bryant of Ottumwa, Kathleen M. (Robert) Foster of Traer and Rita M. Harrington of Waterloo; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Schaefer of Washburn and Sandra Schaefer of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Donald P. and Peter A.; a sister, Marian F. Schaefer; two brothers-in-law, John Bryant and Daniel Harrington.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, both in Eagle Center. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church or the family.

Paul was an avid dirt track stock car racing fan.
