Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Kearns-Dykeman Chapel for Claude F. Payne, 78, formerly of 837 Williston Ave. Mr. Payne, who had resided at Woodlawn Convalescent home since January, 1965 died of a stroke at 10:10 p.m. Sunday in Alien Memorial Hospital. The Rev. J. T. Meyer, visitation pastor of Trinity American Lutheran Church, will officiate at the service, with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery at Calmar. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Monday.

Mr. Payne was born May 22, 1888, at Sedalia, Mo., to Frank and Sarah Payne and married Gena Berne in 1909 at Kansas City, Mo. Following her death Nov. 15,1943, he married Emma Price in Waterloo in 1945.

Mr. Payne, who had been Waterlo resident since 1918, was a mechanic and service manager for Whitehead Nash for many years and had also been employed as a mechanic for Iowa Dairy and the Coca-Cola Bottling Co.

Preceded in death by his parents, first wife, three brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his second wife, also of the Woodlawn Convalescent Home; a son, Dr. Clarence Payne of Greensborough, N.C., and two grandchildren.
