WATERLOO — Mabel Gillett, 88, of Waterloo, died Monday, March 18, 2013, at Mercy Hospital, Des Moines, from injuries suffered in a fall.

She was born Aug. 26, 1924, in New Hartford, daughter of John David Forest and Tillie Huisman Hersey. She married James L. Gillett on Sept. 12, 1947, in Waterloo. He died Aug. 15, 1986.

Mrs. Gillett graduated from New Hartford High School in 1941 and from Gates Business College. She and her husband farmed, and she also was the business manager for Jane’s Flowers & Gifts, retiring in 1976. She served as a missionary in Ireland from 1977 to 2009.

Survived by a son, James W. (Jean) of Dublin, Ireland; a daughter, Mary (Paul) Kline of Norwalk; six grandchildren: Jonathan (Priscilla) Gillett of Fort Montgomery, Texas, Julie (Andy) Burnfield of Longview, Texas, Mark (Jessalyn) Kline of Des Moines, Leah (Abram) Miller of Dubuque, Sarah (Jonathan) Bracewell of Lawton, Okla., and Lois Kline of Norwalk; 12 great-grandchildren: Zoe and Lexi Gillett, Amelia Burnfield, Caedmon, Jayden and Benjamin Kline, Josiah, Jude and Joshua Miller and James, William and Daniel Bracewell; a brother, Fred Hersey of Waterloo; and four sisters: Gloria Card of Marshalltown, Betty Ehmen of Waterloo, Minnie (Fred) Feckers of Clarksville and Jane Rice of Waverly.

Preceded in death by a brother, John Hersey.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at the Western Avenue Gospel Hall, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Locke Funeral Home.
