[Waterloo Courier, Tuesday, March 19, 2013]

Jean Marie (Jerald) Card, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 17, 2013. Jean was born on July 31, 1929, in Waterloo, the first child of Stanley E. and Marjorie K. Jerald. She graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1947, and went on to obtain her BA degree at the University of Colorado in 1951, after beginning her college education at Grinnell College. She began her early career in social work in Denver and it was there that she met her husband William. They married on May 30, 1953.

Jean was working towards a Master’s Degree in Library Science at The University of Denver, when the couple returned to Waterloo to run the family business, Jerald Sulky Company, after Jean’s father passed away in 1957. She had the opportunity to continue with that education at UNI.

Jean was a Sunday School teacher, and she especially enjoyed the life-long service and the friendships she established with her church circle — Martha/Joy at FUMC, as a 50-plus year member. She was also a member of P.E.O. (50-plus years), Tuesday Club and Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, a Camp Fire Girl leader, was active with the Junior League, and the Sons of Norway. In addition, Jean was an enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer at the Cedar Falls Public Library, where she especially enjoyed working with children’s groups, and Sartori Hospital, working with families in the surgical waiting room area.

Though a quiet and soft-spoken person, Jean had many interests and great knowledge of them, stemming from her love of research and librarianship background. She was an avid antique collector and was a bit renowned for her knowledge of them amongst her collecting peers. Entertaining and travel were past-times as well as couples bridge.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, who died on March 26, 2006; her parents, and her younger sister, Judy Hutchins.

She is survived by her sister, Jackie Koch; daughters: Kristin Card, Susan Card and Cathy (John) Chelsvig; grandchildren Margaret, Billy and Libby Chelsvig; and many nieces and nephews. Jean is further survived by numerous friends and colleagues.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls, with private interment in Fairview Cemetery, Waterloo. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Richardson Funeral Service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the First United Methodist Church UMW, the YWCA, or the Cedar Falls Public Library-Youth Projects.
