WATERLOO — Philip A. Thomas, 88, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 30, 1924, in Auburn, Neb., son of Arthur LeRoy and Nan Barron Thomas. He married Mary Ursula Fisher on Nov. 18, 1956, in Cedar Falls.

Mr. Thomas served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as an over-the-road trucker for Zephyr Transportation, retiring after more than 30 years of service. He was a member and chaplain of American Legion Post 138 and Antique Car Club, the Arizona Route 66 Association. He also sang in the Metropolitan Chorale and was a member of the 18th Street Bridge Committee. He was the treasurer for the Cedar River Conference of the ELCA and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and served on many of their committees.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Steven of Waterloo and William (Dianne) of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Cynthia Golden of Waterloo and Pamela (Rick) Roth of Highland, Ill.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eleanor Barkey of Iowa Falls.

Preceded in death by three daughters, Carol Thomas and infant twins; a brother, Arthur Thomas Jr. in infancy; and a son-in-law, Isaiah “Ike” Golden Jr.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138, VFW Post 1623, and the Navy Reserve Honors Detail. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel and an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church, Cedar Valley Hospice, or the American Legion Post.
