WATERLOO — Milton R. “Milt” Mikesh, 88, of Landmark Commons, died there Tuesday, March 5, 2013.

He was born Oct. 14, 1924, in Protivin, son of Mike and Mary Lukes Mikesh. He married Shirley Schafer on June 7, 1951, in Cedar Falls.

Mr. Mikesh graduated in 1942 from Rudolphinum High School, Protivin, and received his bachelor’s degree in instrumental music education from Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa), where he also earned his master’s degree. He was a professional musician and an instrumental music teacher for schools in Arlington, Oelwein and Waterloo, retiring in 1986. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was inducted into the UNI Jazz Hall of Fame and was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church, New Horizons Band, Iowa Military Veterans Band, Northeast Iowa Community Concert Band, Piano Technicians Guild, Gold Wing Road Riders Association and American Legion Post 138.

Survived by his wife; a son, Michael (Jill) of La Porte City; two daughters, Kathryn (Ray Dennis) Mikesh Houser of Johnston and Theresa (Jenny Stabler) Mikesh of Chillicothe, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Daniel (Anna) Houser, Meryl (Adam) Burman, Samuel Houser, Michele (Mike) Schmuecker, Jamie Kotouc, Jason (Elizabeth) Sheffler, Neal Walter and Nathan Walter; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Gracelyn Hope Sheffler; and a sister, Mildred Reissner.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors by Waterloo American Legion Post 138, VFW Post 1623 and the Iowa Army National Guard. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Locke Funeral Home with a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Memorials may be directed to New Horizons Band, the church or family’s choice.
