Robert J. Swehla, 53, a former Waterloo resident, died Sunday at 5 p.m. in Compton, California, of carcinoma. Mr. Swehla had moved to Compton about 13 years ago.

He was born July 22, 1906, in Waterloo, the son of Joseph and Jennie Pond Swehla. He married Dorothy Kirchoff in Waterloo in 1827. They were later divorced.

Mr. Swehla was employed at the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for about 15 years.

He married Grace Thomas Feb. 1, 1950, in Compton.

Surviving are two daughters by his first marriage, Mrs. Delores Prusiner, Sumner, and Mrs. Bonnie Wlodowski, Montae, Michigan; three brothers: Edward, 2610 Easton Ave., DeForrest, Maywood Addition, and Joseph, Venitia, California; one sister, Mrs. Laura Walker, Compton, California, and three grandchildren.

He was preceded by his parents.

Funeral services will be in Compton Wednesday.
