LA PORTE CITY — Tom M. Thompson, 91, of rural La Porte City, died at home Saturday, March 2, 2013.

He was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Clarion, son of Severien and Rachael Gibbs Thompson. He married Elizabeth Cotter on June 3, 1947, in Davenport. She died Oct. 3, 1999.

Mr. Thompson served in the U.S. Marines Corps during World War II in the Pacific theater. He worked at Rath Packing Co. for 19 years and farmed up until his death.

Survived by Barbara (Tom) Rice of Waterloo, Bart (Lynda) Thompson of La Porte City, Bret (Holly) Thompson of Columbus, Neb., Linda Cocchi of Huntington Beach, Calif., Ron Thompson of Sand Creek, Wis., and Ron (Helen) Thompson of Phoenix; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a brother, Gary.

Family-directed memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Washburn, preceded by an hour of visitation.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice. Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel, Waterloo, is assisting the family.

Tom’s heart belonged to agriculture in the Washburn area. “Thank God, I’m a farmer,” he would say. He was a flying farmer and also loved ballroom dancing, and of course the penny slots at the casino.
