WATERLOO — Dr. Royal H. Benson III, 56, of Bryan, Texas, formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, following a brief illness.

He was born Feb. 11, 1957, in Houston, to Royal Henry II and Norma Shipman Benson. He married René Wilson on May 6, 1988, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Waterloo.

He graduated from Texas City High School and attended Texas Tech University, receiving his medical degree from Texas Tech Health Science Center School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at St. Paul Medical Center in Dallas, serving as chief resident of obstetrics/gynecology during his fourth year. Dr. Benson practiced medicine in Waterloo before moving to private practice in Bryan. In 1997, he became a solo practitioner. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, founding member of The Coalition for Life, serving as chairman of the board for many years, and was a member of numerous professional medical organizations.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Tillsley “Tillie girl” Kathleen Benson; three sisters, Kristi (Ted) Armacost of Bryan, Tamera (Bob) Schneider of League City, Lisa (Gary) Johnson of Galveston; his father and mother-in-law, Jim and Dorothy Wilson of Waterloo; three brothers-in-law, Jim (Annette) Wilson and Mike Wilson, both of Waterloo, and Jon (Karla McGregor) Wilson of Iowa City; numerous nieces and nephews; and his labrador retriever, Clara Belle.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Services: were Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bryan, Texas.
