Services Friday For Boy Who Drowned in Cedar

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Evansdate Funeral Home for Leslie Dawson Jr., 7, who drowned May 29 in the Cedar River. His body was recovered yesterday afternoon.

The victim's body was recovered in dragging operations by the Gilbertville fire department about five miles from the place were the boy stepped into deep water while wading during a family picnic. The recovery point was near the Charles Temeyer farm in Poyner Township.

The boy is the son of Leslie and Jean Dawson of Marshalltown and had been living with his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Dawson of 739 Home Acres Ave., Evansdale. The Rev. Kenneth Gamb, pastor of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, will officiate and burial will be in the Poyner Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the Evansdale Funeral Home.

Leslie Dawson was born Oct. 19, 1961. He was a first grader at Jewett elementary school.

Surviving besides his parents and paternal grandparents are one brother, Randy, two half-sisters, the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Niebergall of 1940 Independence Ave., a maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Merle Price of 3007 Randolph St.; a paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Esther Godden of Route 4, a paternal great-grandfather, Max Dawson of La Porte City and a paternal great great-grandmother, Mrs. Annie Walker of Rt. 4.
