George J. Saucer, 72, of 1013 Vine St., Waterloo, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, of cancer.

He was born Nov. 15, 1928, in Clear Lake, son of George and Julia Saucer. A West High School graduate, he served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1950 and was stationed for a time in Trieste, Italy, with the 281st Military Police Company.

His career as a journalist spanned several decades, beginning at the Washington Star in Washington, D.C. He later worked at the Rock County Star Herald in Luverne, Minn. In 1962, he came to the Waterloo Courier, from which he retired in 1994 as the managing editor.

Survived by his wife, Alyce; two sons, Thomas Saucer of Waterloo and Mark Saucer of Tampa, Fla.; two daughters, Elizabeth Burke of Aurora, N.Y., and Caroline Saucer of Bethlehem, Pa.; five grandchildren; and a brother, Edward Saucer of Marion.

Preceded in death by an infant son, Timothy.

Memorial services will be at a date to be announced later. Parrott & Wood Family Funeral Care is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation; his body will be cremated.
