RAYMOND — James M. Schmitz, 76, of rural Raymond, died Wednesday Feb. 23, 2005, at Covenant
Medical Center, Waterloo, following a sudden illness.

He was born March 30, 1928, in Waterloo, son of J.C. and Susan Becker Schmite. On June 23, 1953,
he married Maxine Meier at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville.

Mr. Schmitz graduated from Our Lady of Victory Academy, Waterloo, in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army. The couple farmed in Black Hawk County.

Survivors include his wife; five sons: Tony (Claudia) Schmitz of Burnsville, Minn., Tim (Ellen) Schmitz of Minneapolis, Nick (Stephanie) Schmitz of Raymond, Vince (Kathie) Schmitz of Graston, Minn., and Chris (Sherry) Schmitz of Jesup; five daughters: Geriann (Chris) Raway of Prescott, Wis., Josephine (Randall) Snyder of Winterset, Carolyn (Joe) Breuer of West Union, Lucy (Jim) Breuer of Waterloo and Eva (Paul) Moritz of Ankeny; 33 grandchildren; and a brother; Bob (Eva) Schmitz of Jesup.

Preceded in death by a son, Gerald; and three brothers: the Rev. John Schmitz, Ralph and Leo.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery Raymond. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, Jesup, with a 3 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Memorials may be directed to the church or the Bosco System, Gilbertville.
