Howard G. Popenhagen, 82, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. He was born June 16, 1922 in Fayette County, Iowa, the son of George & Ethel (Beckwith) Popenhagen.
He married Verla Jean Owen January 19, 1944 in Oelwein, Iowa. Howard served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during WWII. He was a mechanic for several years with Olsen Boat House in Cedar Falls and then worked for the Public Works Department for the City of Cedar Falls for 12 years, retiring in 1984.
Survivors include his wife, Verla Jean of Cedar Falls; one son, Gayland (Dianne) Popenhagen of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Donna (Fred) Zmolek of Dike and Bonnie Popenhagen of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren, Miki Zmolek, Sadie (Brett Speedy) Zmolek, and Lisa (Dave) Lines, Jeff (Tami) Popenhagen and Doug (Tina) Popenhagen; four great grandchildren, Jordyn and Courtney Lines, Payton Speedy and Dayton Popenhagen; and one sister, Dorothy (Warren) Williams of Evansdale, Iowa.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Wilma Walters and a sister in infancy; and a brother, Les Popenhagen.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2005 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial at Fairview Cemetery, with military flag folding rites by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49.
A memorial fund will be established.
