WATERLOO - Joseph "Joe" A. Fischbach, 95, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born May 28, 1917, in Orleans, Neb., son of George and Cecelia Willy Fischbach. He married Mary Kay Weiden on Aug. 2, 1943, at Immaculate Conception Church, Gilbertville.

Mr. Fischbach served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in the 35th Field Artillery in World War II. He was stationed at Camp Polk, La., and from there he served in North Africa, Italy, France and Anzio, going through one of the longest battles of World War II, receiving the bronze star.

He was a Nebraska Cornhusker and was looking to see the world when he met his wife of 69 years in Waterloo. He farmed the family farm for 38 years, fully retiring in 1985.

Survived by his wife of Waterloo; a son, Robert J. (Denice) Fischbach of Bloomington, Ill.; a daughter, Connie (Craig J.) Patava of Waterloo; fi ve grandchildren, Jason J. of Joliet, Ill., Major Aaron M. Fischbach and wife, Dr. Sarah Fischbach and children, Michael and Poppy Fischbach of Honolulu, Dr. Sean Fischbach of Huntsville, Ala., Joseph P. Patava of Cedar Falls and Kelli M. Patava of Chicago.

Preceded in death by fi ve brothers, Albert, Sylvester, Victor, Paul and Carl; and five sisters, Marie Wiedel, Helena Wiedel, Sr. Doris Marie OSU, Rose Walters and Margaret Slack.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff -Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Cedar Valley Catholic Schools.
