ERNEST E. SAGE DIED YESTERDAY
RESIDENT OF BENNINGTON TOWNSHIP FOR 47 YEARS
Progressive Farmer and Interested in General Affairs.
Ernest Eugene Sage a prominent farmer of Bennington Township died yesterday at the residence of Mrs. Sage's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schonk, 415 Ninth street east. Mr. Sage had been ill for the past eight months and ten weeks ago was removed to the Schenk home, where he received the best medical aid possible.
Mrs. Sage cared for him since his first illness and was a faithful loving attendant throughout. Prior to his illness he was strong and athletic and his death caused by valvular heart trouble comes as a shock to his many friends.
Born in Illinois
Deceased was born December 18, 1859, at Cherry Valley, Boone County Illinois. He came to Iowa in the spring of 1866 and settled on a farm nine miles north of Waterloo. Here he since resided, and this home with later additions comprises the family homestead. He received his education in the country and city schools and later took several years of medical training. His course was interrupted six months before he would have received his degree, by an attack of the measles. He then became so interested in farming that the practice of medicine was given up. In connection with farming, Mr. Sage taught school in the winter and in this capacity he served successfully for thirteen years.
On April 9, 1890, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Schenk at the home of her parents in Bennington township. Had he lived they would have celebrated their twenty-third wedding anniversary Wednesday.
Mr. Sage was always greatly interested in business and political affairs of the township. He seemed to always be on the right side and was most progressive in his ideas. He was one of the most interested in the organization of the Big Rock Independent Telephone company, and was township clerk and secretary of the Farmers' Institute for a number of years. Mr. Sage was a devotee of the democratic party and his last political act was to vote for Wilson. He was a member of the Mt. Hope church and was active in its work. He was superintendent of the Sunday school and was a member of the board of trustees for thirty years.
Mr. Sage had one of the best improved and most modern farms in this section of the country. No expense whatever was spared when it was for the betterment of the home. Mrs. Sage with the assistance of her children will keep up the farm and carry on the work as planned by Mr. Sage.
Surviving Relatives - Besides the widow, he leaves to mourn his death eight children: Russell H., Frances J., Ernest E., William C., Joseph G., Evan V., Elizabeth P., and Donald F. Sage. Other relatives are two brothers and two sisters, Mrs. Almeda F. Gookins, of Neenach, Cal., Mrs. Harriett C. Gibbs, New Castle, Neb., and Giles W. and Dr. F. C. Sage of Waterloo.
The funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon in Grace M. E. Church with Rev. Hull, pastor of the church in charge. Rev. Hull will be assisted by Rev. J. A. Haehlen, pastor of the Calvary Evangelical Church and an intimate friend of Mr. Sage. George Ferguson. David Hutton, Otto Hillmer, Austin Whitney, August Burk, Arthur Broadbent, and Isaac Whitney will act as pall bearers.
