LA PORTE CITY, IOWA -- Mary V. Mast, 89, of La Porte City, died Thursday, February 24, at Covenant Medical Center following a brief illness.

She was born May 30, 1910, in Hill City, Kansas, the daughter of Lester Dewitt and Lurancia Emiline Fay Cheney. She married Samuel Harrison Mast December 22, 1935, at the Cheney family home northeast of Independence. He preceded her in death in 1980.

She is survived by a son, Earl H. Mast of Mount Zion, Ill.; two daughters, Helen Thoma of Sarasota, Fla. and Evelyn Bynum of Sherman, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by a granddaughter; and two brothers, Earl Cheney and Clarence Cheney.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, La Porte City, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, Independence.
