WATERLOO, IOWA — Garry Ray Snyder, 73, of Waterloo, died at home Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013.

He was born April 5, 1939, in Cresco, son of Kenneth J. and Loma M. Armstrong Snyder. He married Anaruth Cooper on May 7, 1966, in Waterloo.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. Mr. Snyder then worked as a postal clerk, clerk and carrier supervisor for the Waterloo Post Office from 1960 to 1978. In February 1978, he became postmaster at New Hampton until his retirement in October 1992. He returned to Waterloo in 1995 and worked at Corning Clinical lab for a year, was a census taker and worked at P.O.S. as a mail clerk for four years, retiring in 2004. He was pastoral council president at St. Mary’s in New Hampton.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Michael (Stacy) of Altus, Okla., and Darren (Kelli) of McKinney, Texas; two daughters, Kristin (Terry) Frush and Andrea (James) Moeller, both of Waterloo; eight grandchildren, Megan Moeller, Montana Snyder, Jayden Moeller, Jarrett Moeller, Ashlynn Frush, Jakson Snyder, Hadley Snyder and Ryleigh Frush; three brothers: Joe (Pat) of Waterloo, Ed (Shari) of Ankeny and Ken (Shelly) of Alexandria, Minn.; three sisters: Sally (Eldridge) Hicks of Catoosa, Okla., Mary Ellen (Ron) Hellman of Waterloo and Rhoda (Mark) Campbell of Des Moines.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Gary Cooper of Waukon; and a sister-in-law, LaVerna Benzkofer of Houston.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with a 4 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.

Garry enjoyed trout fishing, pheasant hunting, playing cards and shooting pool. He attended many NCAA wrestling tournaments as well as local high school and college events. He was a lifetime Baltimore Orioles, Celtics, Notre Dame football and Iowa State Wrestling fan.
