Fagerlind, Ex-Football Star, dead at 44

Paul S. Fagerlind, 44, 206 Williston Ave., an official of Engineered Equipment Inc., was dead on arrival at Allen Memorial Hospital of a heart attack shortly after noon yesterday.

He was born May 6, 1923, in Waterloo to Dewey E. and Rose Wilson Fagerlind. For the last three years he had been personnel manager for Engineered Equipment Inc. He was a former athletic coach, teacher and a guidance counselor in Iowa and Minnesota schools for ten years.

Mr. Fagerlind married Patricia Balwin on June 3, 1946, in St. Louis. They lived in Iowa and Minnesota before returning to Waterloo three years ago. He attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City and was a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa in 1955. He received his masters degree from UNI in 1959.
While at the University of Iowa, Mr. Fagerlind was a star lineman on the Iowa football team in the early mid-1940s. He also was a standout javelin thrower on the Iowa track team.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Tommy; four daughters: Mrs. Susan Meyer, 317 1/2 W. 7th Street; Sandra, Peggy and Paula, all at home; four sisters: Mrs. Mary Scribner, 2710 Lafayette Street; Mrs. Delores Sloan, of Independence; Mrs. Patricia Heyer, of San Juan, Puerto Rico and Miss Judy Fagerlind, of Independence; and two brothers, Merle, 1635 Locke Ave and Edward, of Rt. 3.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Mr. Fagerlind was an uncle of Merle Fagerlind Jr., Waterloo Marine killed in action last month in Vietnam.

Services are pending at the Chapel of Memories West, where friends may call after 5 p.m. today.
