[Waterloo Courier, Sunday, February 17, 2013]

The Rev. Don Cox, age 78, of Waterloo, went to receive his Great Reward with Jesus and to be reunited with his sweetheart Alice on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013.

He was born Oct. 2 1934, in Willard, Ohio, the son of Clyde E. Cox and Alvina B. Holzhauser Cox. He was united in marriage to Alice Kringle Cox on May 21, 1955, in Dallas, Wis.

Pastor Don graduated from North Central Bible Institute in Minneapolis in 1956 becoming a minister with the Assemblies of God. Soon after graduating, Pastor Don and Alice began their ministry together becoming pastors of their first church in Independence from 1956 to 1958. In 1958 they left Independence for Hillsdale, Wis., where they were pastors from 1958 to 1959. In 1959 Pastor Don went on the evangelistic field until 1961 when he and Alice became pastors at Altoona, Wis., until 1965. In addition to being pastors of local churches Pastor Don and Alice were also pioneers in evangelistic television going on the air in 1958. Their program "Hour of Hope," was seen all over the Midwest until 1979.

In 1964 Pastor Don and Alice moved to Waterloo where they began to pastor First Assembly of God on West Fourth Street until 1970. In 1970 Pastor Don went back on the evangelistic field traveling the country preaching the gospel to thousands until 1992. In 1992 Pastor Don and Alice began to pastor First Assembly of God in Waterloo again, this time the church being on the corner of Martin Road and Highway 63. During this time God spoke to Pastor Don about building a new facility and calling it Celebration. Celebration opened for services in July of 1999. Pastor Don and Alice resigned from Celebration in May of 2012 after spending 56 years in full time ministry.

Pastor Don loved his family dearly. He took care of Alice with joy for the last several years. He lived his entire life as an example of what a true man of God looks like. As a child Don dedicated his life to loving God and loving people. He never once turned away from this dedication, living each day as one wanting to encourage others in their walk with God. He was an inspiration to all, and was always more than happy to take the time to help anyone. In ministry, he was a maverick, having no interest in doing things the way they had always been done. He loved his Celebration church family so much. Even in older age he remained young in his heart loving to laugh.

He was especially fond of children and youth, always thinking of ways that they could have fun at church. He will be greatly missed and all those who knew Pastor Don will be forever marked by his love and compassion. Pastor Don had a lot of great messages but the greatest one was the one he lived.
