LA PORTE CITY, IOWA - Funeral services for Sgt. Michael Eugene Mullen, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Mullen of Rt. 3, La Porte City, who was killed Feb. 18 in Vietnam, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, La Porte City The Rev. Robert W. Cizek, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Eagle Center.

He was killed "on night ambush by friendly forces from artillery fire which dropped in his area," according to notice received by his family from the United States Army.

Rosary services will be at the family home at 7 and 8 p.m. tomorrow where the body will be taken from the Oppold Funeral Home at 12 noon Monday. The body is to arrive in Waterloo late today. Friends may call at the Oppold Funeral Home from 8 a.m. until 12 noon tomorrow.

Michael Mullen was born September 11, 1944 at Des Moines. He attended La Porte City grade schools and Don Bosco High School at Gilbertvllle where he graduated in May, 1963, and received a scholarship to Rockhurst college in Kansas City, where he graduated with honors in June of 1967 with a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry. He was then granted a fellowship to Missouri University, where he was working a doctorate degree in chemistry.

He was drafted into the army in September, 1968. He received his basic training at Camp Polk, La. and then attended N.C.0. school at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he attained the rank of sergeant. He was sent to Vietnam in September of 1969 with the 198th Light infantry with the Americal division, stationed, near Chu Lai, where he was killed on February 18.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church at La Porte City and was active in Black Hawk County Four-H work in which he was a past officer.

He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Patricia, a senior at University of Iowa, Iowa City; Mary at Rockhurst College, Kansas City and a brother, John at home.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother.
