LA PORTE CITY — Franklin E. Weltzin, 77, of La Porte City, died at home Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, of cancer.

He was born Jan. 9, 1936, in rural Jesup, son of Ruben and Edna Kern Weltzin. He married Donna Jean Noe on Sept. 1, 1957, in Brandon.

Mr. Weltzin farmed and also had worked at Vicker’s Gas Station and Town & Country Home Improvements. He was a volunteer driver for the VA Hospital, Iowa City, for many years, and also volunteered at the La Porte City Nursing Home.

Survived by his wife; a son, Daniel (Karen) of Brandon; three daughters: Ruth (Douglas) Frush of Jesup, Pamela (Bud) Jones of Waterloo and Nancy Weltzin of La Porte City; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; a stepbrother, Stanley Phillips; three sisters: Audry (Willie) Henson and Shirley June Roberts, both of Evansdale, and Michele Daniels of Waterloo; a foster brother, Lyal (Nancy) Bauer of Marion; a foster sister, Geraldine Bauer Remmers of Rantoul, Ill.; and two sisters-in-law, Karen Weltzin of Marshalltown and Terry Phillips of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Edna and Louis Phillips; his father and stepmother, Ruben and Maxine Weltzin; his foster parents, Harold and Beunah Bauer; a brother, Delbert Weltzin; two sisters, Alberta (Louie) Winslow and Deloris DeBoey; two foster sisters, Maxine (Bauer) Buchsteiner and Barbara (Bauer) Rosen; a son-in-law, James Sorrell; and a grandson, Justin VanderSchel.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jubilee, rural La Porte City, with inurnment at a later date in the church cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and for an hour before services Friday, all at the church. La Porte City Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the church, La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center or Cedar Valley Hospice.
