WATERLOO — Donald A. Bloch, 82, of Waterloo, died at home Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013.

He was born March 4, 1930, in Great Bend, Kan., son of Albert M. and Agnes Hansen Bloch. He married Valeria J. McLaury on June 2, 1957, in Fairbank.

Mr. Bloch served in the U.S. Army in Frankfurt, Germany, during the Korean conflict. He was a painter and paint contractor for a number of years. He also worked at Jens Olesen/Prairie Construction, where he was a time keeper for 28 years, retiring in 1992.

Survived by his wife; two sons, David (Katherine) of Polk City and Darren (Kathleen) of Ames; two daughters, Diane (Steven) Buck of Waterloo and Vikki Jo (Eric) Bixby of Allison; and 11 grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a brother, Robert; and a sister, Bernice Gutknecht.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, Waterloo, with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Cedar Falls. Friends may call at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and an hour before services Friday at the church. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 and the Iowa Army National Guard Honors Detail.

Memorials may be directed to Grace Lutheran Church Pie Ladies, Allen Hospice or the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Trout Stocking Program.

Donald was an avid reader, fisherman and handyman. He loved a good spy novel and researching history with an emphasis in military history. His passion was trout fishing in Northeast Iowa, and he enjoyed it with his family and friends. He liked to tinker in his workshop and around home, calling himself the “jack of all trades and master of none.
