Dr. Oscar E. Thompson, 92, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania and formerly of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, in Carlisle.

He was born June 16, 1910 in Roberts County, South Dakota, the son of Edward and Anna (Leverson) Thompson.

Oscar earned his bachelor degree at Moorhead University in Moorhead, Minnesota and his masters degree at the University of North Dakota. He spent 49 years in education as a teacher, administrator and an employee of the Pennsylvania State Dept. of Education. Oscar had been a high school teacher, principal and director of school bands. Later, he served on the faculties of the University of Iowa, where he earned his Ph.D. degree, the University of Wyoming, the University of Northern Iowa, North Dakota State University, Oregan State University and Shippensburg University.

Oscar was active in professional education organizations, including the Iowa State Education Association, where he served as president. He was on the Commission of Professional Rights and Responsibilities of the National Education Association and has been on its staff as Associate Executive Secretary in Washington, D.C. Oscar was a member of First United Methodist Church in Carlisle and a former member of the Cedar Falls Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha Boyd Thompson, of Carlisle; a son, Richard Thompson, of Tucson, Arizona; a step-daughter, Donna Boyd Jenkinson, of Levittown, Pennsylvania; and two grandsons, Bruce and Curtis Thompson, both of Berkley, California.

Oscar was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Ballard Thompson, and his parents.

Graveside committal services were 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church, 64 East North St., Carlisle, PA 17013.
