WATERLOO — James M. Smith, 64, of Waterloo, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at his winter home in DeLand, Fla., of natural causes.

He was born July 1, 1948, in Waterloo, son of Junior “Bud” and Eileen Dix Smith.

Mr. Smith graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1966 and attended DeVry University. He retired from the Waterloo Community School District as a master electrician and computer technician. He served 20 years in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam and retired as a staff sergeant with HHC 1/133rd Infantry Division of the Iowa National Guard Unit in Waterloo.

Survived by a daughter, Christine Michelle (Erik) Heisey of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a stepson, John NeSmith of Cedar Falls; two grandchildren, Gunther and Abigail; his mother of Evansdale; a brother, Kenneth B. (Diane) of Prior Lake, Minn.; a sister, Carol (Steve) Stevenson of Cedar Falls; three nephews; a niece; special friend, Barbara Dierksen and her son David; and his cocker spaniel, Hemi.

Preceded in death by his father.

Memorial services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Locke Funeral Home, preceded by an hour of visitation, with military rites by the Iowa National Guard. Memorials may be made to the family.

James was avid flight enthusiast and recently had obtained his pilot’s license in Florida, where he enjoyed piloting his own plane.
