WATERLOO — Thomas J. Shepherd, 85, formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Hospice of the Valley, Mesa, Arizona.

He was born Oct. 6, 1927, in Waterloo, son of Benjamin Shepherd and Emma Friedrichs Reuter. He married Charlotte Y. Fairbanks on Dec. 31, 1946, in Waterloo. They later divorced. He married Eunice Madsen on Oct. 31, 1999.

He attended West Junior High and was employed by the Illinois Central Railroad. Mr. Shepherd joined the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended Gates Business School, Waterloo. He joined the Waterloo Fire Department in 1950, retiring as Captain after thirty-two years of service. He also built many homes in Waterloo, sold real estate and owned his own appraisal business.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Rev. Victoria L. Shepherd of Iowa City and Rebecca A. Ertl (John) of Waterloo; a son, Michael T. (Shaunna) of Independence; four stepdaughters, Connie Little (Kevin) of Gilbert, Ariz., Donna Jackson (Dave) of Gilbert, Ariz., Diane Madsen of Winona Lake, Ind., and Brenda Pederson (Hutch) of Sioux Rapids; a stepson, Brian Madsen (Melissa) of Rembrandt; 10 grandchildren; six, step-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a brother, Robert Shepherd; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Shepherd; and a sister in infancy, Mary Jane Shepherd.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday at Locke Funeral Home, with burial at a later date in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation for an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.
