Waterloo Man Killed in Collision

Lester W. Schlie, 26, of 902 Fairview Ave., employed as a clerk at the Rath Packing Co., for the past eight years, was killed when the automobile he was driving and a truck collided at 8:10 p. m. Tuesday, four miles east of Parkersburg on Highway 20.

Elton Hensal of Colfax, was driving the truck, which was going east. Schlie was driving west in his automobile when the accident occurred, according to the Iowa Highway Patrol, which investigated. Schlie was taken to Allen Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.

He was born Feb 9, 1928 at Gladbrook, Iowa, the son of Henry and Elvina Weidow Schlie.

Lester was graduated from East High School in 1947 and had been a member of the football tam here. He served overseas in Korea for two years in the army medical corps. Since 1946 he had been employed as a clerk at the Rath Packing Co.He had started working there part time while still a student and continued ever since, except for the time he was in the army.

He had made his home with a sister, Mrs. Harold Bohr, 902 Fairview. He was a member of First Lutheran church and of the Amvets.

Surviving are his parents, Mr and Mrs. Henry Schlie, 2113 Mulberry St.; six sisters: Mrs. George Peterson, 1413 Riehl St., Mrs Darwin Pelley, 1109 Oregon St. Mrs. Gordon Eschen, Oakland Calif.; Mrs. Bohr, 902 Fairview Mrs. Aloy Pekrul, 506 California St., Mrs. Ray Stapleton, Oakland Calif.; one. brother, Keith Schlie of 2102 Mulberry St., and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Millie Weidow, West Union.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Friday at the First Lutheran church by the Rev. Bruno Schlachtenhaufen pastor. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. The body is at the Chapel of Memories.
