Services for Mrs. Verna Smith, 72, of 1017 Burton Ave., will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Locke Funeral Home, the Rev. David E. Smith, pastor of Burton Avenue Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Mrs. Smith died Friday afternoon at University Hospitals at Iowa City of a heart condition. Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at Locke Funeral Home.

She was born Nov. 9, 1901, in Cedar Falls, the daughter of Andrew and Christina Petersen, and was married to Howard S. Smith July 15, 1916, in Waterloo. She attended Burton Avenue Baptfst Church, and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen Auxiliary, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles.

Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. James Duschen of 726 Newton St., Mrs. Wendell Madole of 1522 Shady Lane, Mrs. George Roberts of 2228 Valley Park Dr., Cedar Falls, and Mrs. John Guldner of 148 Woodlawn Rd.; a son, Jack H. of Sigourney; two sisters, Miss Jennie I. Petersen and Miss Esther J. Petersen, both of 533 Conger St.; three brothers: the Rev. Sidney Petersen of Orleans, Neb., Donald W. Petersen of 228 Hammond Ave., and Eugene Petersen of Winslow, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two brothers.
