Michael McCoy McKinstry

Mike was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on Oct. 1, 1947, and passed away on Jan. 21, 2013 while vacationing with several of his best friends in Costa Rica. He lived in Centennial, Colorado.

After graduating from West High School in Waterloo in 1965, Mike moved to Boulder to attend the University of Colorado. After college, Mike decided to pursue a career in law, and his love for Colorado led him to enroll at The University of Colorado Law School. Upon receiving his J.D. in 1973, Mike accepted a position as a law clerk at the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, where he worked for one year. After completing his clerkship in 1974, he accepted a position at Fairfield and Woods, where he spent the rest of his professional career.

Mike was a dedicated husband, father and loyal friend who lived every day to the fullest. When he wasn’t coaching his children’s sports teams, Mike could be found supporting his beloved Colorado Buffaloes, playing golf, or spending time at Grand Lake, where he enjoyed boating, sailing, playing horse-shoes, hiking, and giving water-ski “lessons.” Mike lived life with an energy and joy that was admired by all. He was a friend and mentor to many and will be missed by all who knew him. We will all remember his friendly smile and infectious laugh.

Mike is survived by his wife, Sandra McKinstry, his children Megan Sussman, Ty McKinstry and Andy McKinstry, his grandchild, Hanley McKinstry, and his sister, Jane McKinstry.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church in Englewood followed by a reception at Cherry Hills Country Club from 3 to 6 p.m.

Memorial contributions in honor of Mike may be made to the University of Colorado Foundation. Donate online through www.cufund.org/mckinstry or send a check to CU Foundation, Attn: Processing, 4740 Walnut St., Boulder, CO 80301.
