WATERLOO — Cullen Crawford Sr., 91, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.

He was born July 27, 1921, in Senatobia, Miss., son of Tom Wilson and Sylvia Brooks Crawford. He married Everlue Lewis Kincaid in Waterloo, and they divorced. He then married Barbara Oscars Crawford.

After graduating from school, Mr. Crawford served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 and earned the ATO medal, EAMETO medal, Good Conduct medal and the World War II Victory medal. He moved to Waterloo and was employed at Rath Packing Co. for 38 years before retiring. He owned Crawford’s Laundromat and Grocery Store from 1968-2011.

Survived by his wife; five daughters, Lena Cherry of Milwaukee, Sylvia (Keith) McLean of San Francisco, and Treva Crawford Moore, Darlene Crawford and Nina Crawford Bryant, all of Waterloo; a stepdaughter, Julie (Don) Johnson of Maryland; two sons, Cullen Crawford of Waterloo and Michael Crawford of Alaska; three stepsons, Fredrick Oscars and Gregory Oscars of Waterloo, and David (Rose) Oscars of Maryland; a sister, Agnes Cook of Memphis, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceded in death by two sons, Vernon Crawford and Maurice Gordon; three sisters, Mary Etta Loveberry, Louise Crawford and Blanche Scurlock; and three brothers, James “Jim” Crawford, Benjamin “Buster” Crawford and Robert Crawford.

Services: were today at Community Baptist Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, with full military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 138 and VFW Post No. 1623. Sanders Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the family at 601 Logan Ave.

Mr. Crawford had a strong belief in Black-owned businesses, and always spoke of the pride and dignity which comes from owning and supporting Black-owned enterprises.
