W. S. MICHAEL DEAD

SUMMONS CAME THIS MORNING AT 1:20 AT THE FAMILY HOME, 127 ARGYLE STREET

SICK EIGHTEEN WEEKS

Has Been a Resident of Waterloo for
Many Years—Funeral Sunday at 2:30.

Winfield S. Michael died at 1:20 o'clock this morning at the family residence, 127 Argyle street, after lingering illness of consumption. Mr. Michael's illness dates back about three years ago when he was stricken with a severe attack of the la grippe. Eighteen weeks ago he suffered another attack of the grip and since that time had been bed-ridden. He had been very low for several weeks and his death was not unexpected.

Mr. Michael became reconciled to his fate. After learning that he could not long survive, Mr. Michael began making his funeral arrangements. He selected the songs he wished sung, the funeral, he selected the pastor and pall bearers and made full arrangements for the services. The one dread that he seemed to have was that he would die a hard death. He often prayed that he might pass away peacefully and that there would be little choking, sensation. His prayers were answered, and although conscious to the last moment, the end came so easily as to be scarcely perceptible.

Yesterday Mr. Michael told his wife that he thought he would die last night. His son's birthday was yesterday and he presented him with a watch and chain, and expressed the hope that he might live until the anniversary of his son's birth had passed. At about 1:00 o'clock this morning Mr. Michael told his wife that he could last only a few minutes longer and asked her to summon his sister Mrs. Minnie Skinner. Mrs. Michael stepped to the telephone to call up the relative at Cedar Rapids. There was some little delay in making the connection and as Mrs. Michael turned from the telephone she saw her husband's eyes fastened upon her, and in them shone a peculiar light Realizing that the end was near at hand, she asked him if he recognized her. He gave a slight nod of the head, closed his eyes, and the breath ceased.

Winfield Scott Michael was born in Bremer County, six miles east of Waverly, November 16, 1857, and was 47 years of age at the time of his death. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. George Michael, but both passed away several years ago.

Thirty-two years ago deceased came to Waterloo and had made his home here continuously since that time When a young man he entered the grocery business and conducted a store on upper East Fourth Street. Later he became a salesman in the H & F Department Store where he was employed for a number of years. From there he assumed control of the Racket store and remained as manager for a number of years. Four years ago he opened a real estate office and at the time of death was located in the Lafayette block.

April 5, 1882, he was united in marriage to Etta M. Jenkins. To them one child was born, Clae, who resides at home. Other relatives are a sister, Mrs. Minnie Skinner, of Cedar Rapids, and his widow.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. Cailen officiating. A brief private service will be held at the home at 2 o'clock.

Deceased was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, and that order may take charge of the funeral at the grave. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
