BERNARD M. SKILLEN

Funeral services for Bernard M. Skillen, 55, of 1328 Bishop Ave., will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Presbyterian Church. Mr. Skillen died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday in St. Francis Hospital. Friends may call at Kearns-Dykeman Chapel after 7 p.m. Monday. Those who wish may contribute to the memorial fund of the church in his name.

He was born May 7, 1918, in Greene, the son of John and Ida Cirks Skillen. He served in the infantry during World War II in the South Pacific Theatre and received the Bronze Star. He also served in the Korean Conflict in an ordinance division. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves in the 289th Ord. Co. of Waterloo for 19 A years, attaining the rank of master sergeant. since 1945.

He married Lavonne E. Eldridge on July 17, 1943, in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He was a supervisor at the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works and had been employed there for 28 years. He had been a resident of Waterloo since 1945.

He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church Church, the board of deacons, D.A.V. and a past president of Antique Acres Club of Cedar Falls.

He is survived by his wife; mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Henline of Greene; two daughters, Mrs. Kandace Good of 438 Grand Blvd., Evansdale, and Deva at home; a sister. Mrs. Juanita Bean of 613 Maynard St.; a step-sister, Mrs.
Marilyn Hoeft of Charles City; and a grandson.

Preceding him in death was his father.

Staff Sgt. Bernard M. Skillen, whose wife resides at 66 Mulberry Street, has been a patient in a New Guinea hospital receiving treatment for malaria fever since May 25. Sergeant Skillen was stationed in Hawaii from October, 1943, to February this year, when he was transferred to New Guinea. He was attached to an infantry unit.
