WATERLOO — Arthur “Art” “Archie” Merritt, 85, of Waterloo, died Friday, Jan. 11, at Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born Aug. 19, 1927, in Buckingham, son of Arthur Ray and Cleo Ravlin Merritt.

He graduated from the Geneseo Schools in 1927. Mr. Merritt served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He worked at John Deere as a machine operator, retiring in 1987. He spent most of his summers as a volunteer fishing guide and cook at Paradise Cove, Minaki, Canada, and his winters in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was a proud member and leader for alcoholic anonymous, a member of the Dysart American Legion, and a former member of the Waterloo VFW.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Dale and Marvin.

Survived by two brothers, Thomas of Harlan and Delbert (Shirley) of Alabama; a sister JoAnn (Tim) Scarbrough of Belle Plaine, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Parrott and Wood Chapel of Memories, military rites by Becker Chapmam Post 138 and Waterloo VFW, with burial at a later date. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home

A memorial fund is being established.
