WATERLOO — Russell Piehl, 48, of Forest City, formerly of Denver, died north of Ventura on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, the victim of a medical helicopter accident.

He was born Feb. 5, 1964, in Waterloo, son of Burton and LaVonne Scharnhorst Piehl.

Mr. Piehl graduated from Denver Community High School in 1982, and during his senior year started his EMS career as a first responder with the Denver Ambulance Service. Over the course of the last 30 years, he worked at various ambulance services across the state of Iowa, also as director of EMS services in Algona. He later became the EMS manager for training and education at North Iowa Area Community College. He was a current member of the Forest City Ambulance Service. In 2007 he became a Mercy AirMed flight paramedic in Mason City.

Survived by his wife, Melody; six children: Kayla, Jesse, Tricia, Brandon, Courtney and Cassie; two grandchildren; and three brothers: Gregg (Vicki), Doug (Colleen) and Bruce (Betty).

Preceded in death by his parents; and grandparents, Martha and Edward Piehl and Herbert and Ida Oberheau.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Forest City. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City, and for an hour before services Tuesday at the church. Additional services 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Denver, preceded by an hour of visitation. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Denver. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Denver, is assisting the family with local services.
